1. Select a Tipping Skip That Is Suitable for the Forklift

  • The maximum adjustment available across the carriage.

2. Check the Forklift's Rated Capacity

The forklift must be capable of safely lifting the combined weight of the empty attachment and its contents.

Total lifted load = empty tipping skip weight + weight of the material inside it

Do not check only the nominal capacity stated in the forklift's model name. The actual permitted capacity may depend on:

  • The stated load centre.
  • The distance between the load and the fork carriage.
  • The height to which the skip will be lifted.
  • The weight and dimensions of the attachment.
  • The mast and forklift configuration.
  • Any derating required when an attachment is fitted.

4. Inspect the Tipping Skip Before Use

Before fitting or operating the attachment, check:

  • The skip body for distortion, cracks or significant corrosion.
  • The fork pockets for damage, deformation or obstructions.
  • Welded joints for visible cracking or separation.

An uneven load can affect stability, place unnecessary stress on the tipping and locking mechanisms and cause the material to discharge unpredictably.

10. Travel With the Skip in a Safe Position

When moving a loaded tipping skip, carry it as low as safely practicable while maintaining sufficient ground clearance.

A raised attachment increases the combined centre of gravity and can make the forklift less stable, particularly during turns, braking or travel across uneven ground.

Operators should:

  • Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly.
  • Avoid sharp turns.
  • Reduce speed before corners and doorways.

Heavy-duty construction does not increase the forklift's capacity. A stronger skip may itself weigh more, so its empty weight must still be included in the total lifted load.
