In the UK plant trade, the terms grading bucket and ditching bucket are commonly used for the same type of fixed attachment. They may also be described as finishing buckets, ditch-cleaning buckets or dyking buckets. Whatever name is used, the basic purpose is the same: controlled levelling, shaping and movement of loose material rather than aggressive ground penetration.

What Are Excavator Grading Buckets Used For?
A grading bucket is normally used during the later stages of groundwork, when accuracy and surface finish matter more than breaking into compacted ground. Its width lets the operator cover more ground with each pass and work material into a consistent level.

The current range covers mini diggers and excavators from 1 to 22 tonnes. Machine weight provides a useful starting point, but it does not confirm fitment by itself. Two excavators in the same weight class can use different pin dimensions or quick-hitch systems.

How to Choose the Right Grading Bucket
The widest available bucket is not automatically the best choice. A wider bucket can cover ground quickly and move more loose material, but it also increases bucket weight, material load and leverage on the machine. A narrower option may give better control in confined areas or when the excavator is working close to its practical lifting capacity.
Before choosing an excavator grading bucket, check the following:
- Machine make and model: identify the exact excavator rather than relying only on its advertised tonne class.
- Operating weight: attachments and machine configurations can change the actual carrier weight.
- Hitch type: confirm whether the bucket will be fitted directly to the dipper or through a manual, hydraulic or dedicated quick hitch.
- Pin diameter: measure the pins accurately and check both pins if necessary.
- Pin centres: measure from the centre of one pin to the centre of the other.
- Dipper gap: measure the internal distance between the bucket mounting ears.
- Required width: consider the working area, material, desired finish and machine stability.
Never assume that a bucket will fit simply because it is listed for the same machine weight. Quick hitches, aftermarket couplers and different model generations can all change the required linkage dimensions.
Is a Grading Bucket the Same as a Ditching Bucket?
For standard fixed buckets, grading bucket and ditching bucket usually describe the same attachment. Both names refer to a wide bucket with a smooth cutting edge used for levelling, shaping, finishing and clearing loose material from ditches.
The name alone does not define every design. A tilt ditching bucket can be angled hydraulically, while a V-ditching bucket has a shaped profile for forming drainage channels. These should not be confused with the fixed grading and ditching buckets shown in this collection.
Grading Buckets vs Digging Buckets
Grading and digging buckets are intended for different stages of the job:
- Grading or ditching bucket: wide and normally toothless, making it suitable for levelling, finishing, ditch cleaning and handling loose material.
- Digging bucket: narrower and deeper, normally with teeth that help penetrate compacted soil during excavation and trenching.
