Choosing a grading bucket width is not simply a case of fitting the widest bucket listed for your excavator. A wider bucket covers more ground per pass, but it is also heavier, holds more material and creates more leverage at reach. The right width is one your machine can control comfortably in the material and space you work in.

The bucket must also suit the exact excavator, quick hitch, linkage dimensions, working radius and material. A bucket being listed for the right tonne class does not confirm that it will fit or that every width is suitable for every machine in that class.

The imperial descriptions are rounded for familiarity. Use the stated millimetre width when access or finished working width is critical.
What Does Grading Bucket Width Actually Measure?
Grading bucket width normally refers to the working width across the cutting edge. It tells you how wide a pass the bucket can make, but it does not tell you the bucket's capacity or whether its linkage will fit your excavator.
Do not confuse working width with the dipper gap, sometimes called the bucket ear width. The dipper gap is a much smaller linkage measurement taken between the mounting ears. Along with the pin diameter and pin centres, it is used to confirm fitment.
Width and capacity are also different measurements. Two 1500mm buckets can have different depths, profiles, capacities and empty weights. Always read the complete product specification rather than choosing from width alone.

Why the Widest Bucket Is Not Always the Best Choice
A wider grading bucket creates a broader pass and can carry more loose material. On a flat, open site, that may reduce the passes needed to trim an area. The trade-off is that width changes more than surface coverage.
Bucket Weight and Material Capacity
A wider version normally weighs more before any soil enters it and then holds a larger load. The difference is clear in the current range:
- On the 6–8 tonne model, moving from 1500mm to 1800mm increases empty weight from 204kg to 236kg and heaped capacity from 274 to 332 litres.
- On the 15–22 tonne model, moving from 2100mm to 2400mm increases empty weight from 622kg to 688kg and heaped capacity from 815 to 939 litres.
- On the 4–6 tonne model, the 1200mm bucket weighs 146kg and the 1500mm bucket weighs 174kg.
The extra capacity is useful only if the excavator can manage the combined weight of the bucket, hitch and material at the required working radius.
Material Makes a Big Difference
A bucketful of dry topsoil does not place the same demand on the machine as the same volume of wet clay or dense aggregate. If the work regularly involves heavy or saturated material, a narrower bucket may produce better cycle times and feel more controlled than the widest available option.
Grading buckets are intended mainly for loose and previously excavated material. If the surface is hard, compacted or stony, using a digging bucket for the main excavation and changing attachments for the final trim is usually more effective.
Reach, Ground and Machine Position
A bucket that feels manageable close to the tracks may place much greater demand on the excavator when the boom is extended. Sloping, soft or uneven ground also provides a less favourable working platform than firm, level ground.
Use the excavator manufacturer's attachment and lifting guidance when checking a proposed combination. The bucket supplier can confirm the attachment specification, but the carrier's capability still needs to be considered for the way it will be used.
Access and Manoeuvring Space
A wide bucket needs room to swing and work. Fences, walls, gate openings, parked plant and live site traffic can make the theoretically faster option awkward in practice. A narrower bucket may complete a confined job with fewer interruptions and less risk of catching surrounding objects.
Which Width Should You Choose for Each Excavator Class?
1–2 Tonne Mini Digger: 900mm
A 900mm fixed grading bucket gives a small excavator a useful finishing edge without becoming excessively wide for typical domestic and restricted-access work. It suits garden landscaping, path preparation, light ditch maintenance and tidying after narrow trenching. The current model weighs 51kg and has a 37-litre heaped capacity.
2–3.5 Tonne Excavator: 1200mm
The 1200mm option is a practical step up for compact machines working on driveways, landscaping projects and small groundwork sites. It covers more surface than the 900mm bucket while remaining suited to the spaces in which 2–3.5 tonne excavators are commonly used. The current bucket weighs 99kg and has a 105-litre heaped capacity.
4–6 Tonne Excavator: 1200mm or 1500mm
Choose 1200mm when the machine works around buildings, services or narrow access, or when controlled trimming matters more than maximum coverage. Choose 1500mm for open landscaping and groundwork where a wider pass will save time. The wider model adds 28kg of empty attachment weight, so the exact carrier and working conditions still matter.
6–8 Tonne Excavator: 1500mm or 1800mm
The 1500mm option is the more conservative choice for mixed duties, tighter sites and heavier loose material. The 1800mm bucket offers 300mm more coverage and 58 litres more heaped capacity, making it attractive for large, level areas. It also weighs 32kg more before loading, so do not judge the choice on pass width alone.
10–14 Tonne Excavator: 1800mm
An 1800mm bucket provides a broad working face for large groundworks, reinstatement, ditch maintenance and civil-engineering sites. The current model weighs 367kg and has a 499-litre heaped capacity. Confirm that the complete loaded attachment suits the machine, coupler and expected working radius.
15–22 Tonne Excavator: 2100mm or 2400mm
Choose 2100mm where manoeuvrability, dense material or control takes priority. The 2400mm model is better suited to high-output grading across open platforms, embankments and earthworks when the machine and conditions support it. Compared with the 2100mm version, it adds 66kg of empty weight and 124 litres of heaped capacity.
Choose the Width Around the Job
The excavator class limits the sensible range, but the job should decide which suitable option is best.
- Confined landscaping: favour the narrower suitable width around walls, fences, paths and planting.
- Driveways and formation levels: a wider bucket can reduce passes on open ground with loose material.
- Ditch cleaning: match the bucket to the existing channel and available access.
- Bank and verge shaping: consider reach, slope and machine position as well as pass width.
- Backfilling: allow for the weight of wet spoil rather than assuming ideal dry material.
- General hire: the narrower suitable option may be more versatile across unknown sites.
Width Does Not Confirm Bucket Fitment
A 1200mm grading bucket for one 3-tonne excavator may not share the same pickup dimensions as a 1200mm bucket for another. Quick hitches, couplers and model changes can alter the required linkage even when the carrier weights appear similar.

- Machine operating weight and configuration
- Pin-on or quick-hitch fitment
- Quick-hitch make and model, where known
- Pin diameter
- Pin centres
- Dipper gap or internal bucket ear width

A Simple Grading Bucket Width Checklist
- Start with the carrier class. Remove any buckets that are not built for the excavator's weight range.
- Define the main job. Decide whether the bucket will be used mainly for confined landscaping, open grading, ditch cleaning, backfilling or material movement.
- Check the space. Measure gates, passages and any restricted working areas rather than considering the open part of the site alone.
- Consider the heaviest regular material. Base the choice on realistic wet or dense material, not the lightest load the bucket might carry.
- Compare weight and capacity. Include the bucket, hitch and expected load rather than looking only at width.
- Think about reach and ground conditions. Open, level work is different from reaching across a ditch or working on a slope.
- Confirm linkage dimensions. Never order from the tonne class and width alone.
