Wide Load Attachments & Carriage Adaptors

Forklift wide load attachments let one forklift carry loads that are wider or longer than a standard fork spread can safely support: oversized pallets, pipes, steel, extrusions and timber. Carriage adaptors go one step further, widening your carriage or changing its class so it can take more attachments.

How to Choose a Wide Load Attachment

Over the forks or on the carriage?

The four fork attachment and the adjustable four prong attachment slip over your existing forks and lock on with a heel pin, so they're quick to fit and take off. The carriage mounted wide load stabiliser mounts on the carriage and adds an outer fork on each side while your own forks stay in place, which suits a truck that moves wide loads every day.

Fixed or adjustable outer forks?

If your loads are always the same width, fixed outer forks keep things simple. If widths vary, or pallet bearers sit in different places, the adjustable four prong attachment lets you slide the outer forks along the beam, with up to 1000mm of adjustment.

Width, weight and fork length

Tell us the width, length and weight of your widest and heaviest loads. On the adjustable four prong attachment, the forks can't be more than 50% longer than your forklift's own forks. A wide load moves the centre of gravity, so check your forklift's capacity with the attachment fitted.

False Carriages and Adaptor Carriages

A forklift false carriage hangs on your carriage to make it wider, so you can spread the forks further or run four forks. A forklift adaptor carriage changes the carriage class, letting a class 3 truck use class 2 attachments, or a class 4 truck use class 3 attachments. Both are made from 50D boron steel, which reduces wear on the top rail.

Where They're Used

Steel stockholders, timber and builders' merchants, pipe and extrusion makers, and manufacturers with oversized pallets use them to move long and wide loads with one forklift, instead of a sideloader or two trucks working together.

Moving Wide Loads Safely

  • Lock the attachment to the forks or carriage before you lift
  • Centre the load across all the forks so it's evenly supported
  • Travel slowly with the load low, and watch your width at doors, racking and corners
  • Keep people clear, especially when turning
  • Never exceed the capacity of the attachment or of your forklift with it fitted

Wide Load Attachment FAQs

What carriage class is my forklift?

Carriage class depends on your forklift's capacity and is shown by the height of the carriage plate: class 2 carriages are 407mm high, class 3 are 508mm and class 4 are 635mm. Send us your truck details and we'll check it for you.

Can you build an attachment for my loads?

Yes. The four prong attachments and the carriage mounted stabiliser are built to order for your load width and weight, and the false and adaptor carriages can be made in custom widths and capacities.
