How an Excavator Mulcher Works
A hydraulic piston motor spins a heavy rotor, fitted with forged hammer blades or fixed teeth, through a belt drive. As the head works over trees, scrub and hedgerows, the rotor shreds the material against the counter-blades and leaves it on the ground as mulch. On the 100-FMH and 200-FMH, a hydraulically controlled flap opens or closes the front of the frame from the cab to control the material.
Mulcher or Flail Mower?
A flail mower is built for grass, brambles and hedge growth: our largest, the 5–10 tonne flail mower, cuts material up to 80mm thick. A forestry mulcher head is built for heavier work, shredding trees, hedgerows and dense vegetation. If you're mostly cutting back growth, a flail is the lighter, simpler tool. If you're clearing scrub and small trees, choose a mulcher.
Choosing the Size
- 060-FMH for 5–10 tonne excavators, 800mm or 1000mm wide, with a manual flap
- 100-FMH for 9–15 tonne excavators, 1050mm or 1300mm wide, with a hydraulic flap
- 200-FMH for 15–25 tonne excavators, 1050mm, 1300mm or 1600mm wide
A wider head clears more with each pass, so match it to your machine's auxiliary flow as well as its weight.
Hydraulics and Fitment
We confirm each head suits your machine's hydraulics and hitch before it's supplied. Send us your excavator make, model and operating weight, its auxiliary flow and pressure, and your quick hitch or pin diameter, pin centres and dipper width. Quick couplings aren't included.
Before You Mulch
A mulcher throws wood and stones, so keep everyone well clear and walk the area first for wire, fencing, stones and other hidden objects. In England, hedgerows on or next to agricultural land can't be cut or trimmed from 1 March to 31 August unless an exception applies, and it's an offence to damage or destroy an active bird's nest. Our guide on how to clear overgrown land with an excavator covers planning the job.
Excavator Mulcher FAQs
What size mulcher do I need?
Match it to your excavator's weight first: 5–10 tonnes for the 060-FMH, 9–15 tonnes for the 100-FMH and 15–25 tonnes for the 200-FMH. Then send us your auxiliary flow and we'll confirm the width.
Rollaway hammers or fixed teeth?
The 060-FMH and 100-FMH come with uni-directional rollaway forged hammer blades or fixed teeth, and the 200-FMH with rollaway hammers. Tell us what you'll be clearing and we'll help you choose.
Are hoses included?
Yes. Each head comes with spiral-protected hydraulic hoses and fittings. Quick couplings aren't included, so tell us which you need.
How long does delivery take?
Usually 7 to 10 working days for the 060-FMH and 100-FMH. We confirm the price and lead time of the 200-FMH with your quote.
