How an Excavator Auger Works
An earth drill is a hydraulic drive unit that hangs from a hitch on your dipper. Oil from your excavator's auxiliary circuit turns its hydraulic motor, which turns the auger. The teeth cut the ground and the flighting lifts the spoil out of the hole.
Oil flow sets how fast the auger turns and pressure sets the torque. The circuit needs to run both ways, so you can reverse the auger to free it.
Choosing an Earth Drill
Start with your excavator's operating weight, then check its auxiliary circuit can supply the drive's oil flow and pressure:
- 0.75 to 1 tonne micro excavators: the 1200, with a 50mm round output shaft for S2 augers.
- 1 to 5 tonne mini diggers: the X1500, X2000, X2500, 3000 MAX, 3500 MAX and 4500 MAX, with a 65mm round output shaft for S4 augers.
- 4.5 to 8 tonne excavators: the 5500 MAX, 7000 MAX and 8000 MAX, with a 75mm square output shaft for S5 augers.
- 8 to 22 tonne excavators: the 12000 MAX, 15000 MAX, 20000 MAX and 25000 MAX, with a 75mm square output shaft for S6 augers.
Where two sizes overlap, the bigger drive gives you more torque for larger holes and harder ground, as long as your machine can supply its oil flow. Compare them all in our auger drives.
Choosing an Auger
Pick the diameter the job needs, within your earth drill's recommended range, then choose the teeth for the ground:
- Earth teeth: for clay, topsoil and mixed ground.
- Tungsten teeth: for harder, abrasive and stony ground.
- Rock teeth: for very hard and fractured rock, on S5 and S6 augers.
See all our auger bits for diameters and lengths.
Hitches
Every earth drill needs a hitch to mount it on your excavator. Ours are made to measure for your pin diameters, pin centres and dipper width. Choose a double pin hitch for a rigid mount, or a double pin cradle hitch for more control over the auger's position and angle on uneven ground. The 1200 uses a single pin hitch. See all our auger hitches.
More Than Post Holes
Swap the auger for a log splitter, a stump planer or a cement mixer bowl and the same earth drill splits logs, planes out tree stumps and mixes concrete. See our auger drive attachments.
Drilling Safely
- Check for buried cables and pipes before you drill, and follow HSE guidance on avoiding danger from underground services.
- Keep people well clear of the turning auger.
- Let the auger cut at its own pace rather than forcing it down.
- If the auger binds, stop and reverse it to free it.
- Stay within your excavator's lifting limits when you lift a loaded auger out of the hole.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size holes can an excavator auger drill?
From 100mm to 1,500mm across with the Auger Torque range, depending on the earth drill. The table above shows the range for each drive, and our guide on what size auger you need explains how to choose.
Does an earth drill come with a hitch?
No. The hitch is made to fit your excavator, so it's sold separately. Each earth drill comes with hoses.
Do I need auxiliary hydraulics to run an auger?
Yes. An earth drill needs a two-way auxiliary circuit within its oil flow and pressure range. On the 12000 MAX and larger, an optional 2-way valve converts a single-acting hammer circuit.
How long does delivery take?
Usually 7 to 10 working days. Hitches are made to your measurements, so we confirm them before anything is supplied. Ask us if you need it for a fixed date.
