Excavator Auger Drives

Excavator auger drives, also called earth drills, are the hydraulic drive units that turn an auger. The Auger Torque range covers 0.75 to 50 tonne excavators, from 1,164Nm to 152,319Nm of torque, and drives up to the 25000 MAX come with hoses.

Each drive also needs a hitch made to fit your machine and an auger that matches its output shaft. Drives from the 35,000 MAX up are quoted with their hitch and augers. Our guide on what size auger you need shows how to match all three, or browse all our excavator augers.

What's Inside an Auger Torque Earth Drill

  • Hydraulic motor: a high-quality motor turns the output shaft.
  • Gearbox: the MAX models use an epicyclic (planetary) gearbox to multiply the motor's torque, and the 1200 has a planetary gearbox.
  • Non-dislodgement shaft: a one-piece shaft locked into the drive, so it can't drop out.
  • Oversized bearings: output shaft bearings that Auger Torque says are up to 50% larger than competing drives'.
  • Forged hood ears: on the MAX models, for extra strength where the hood takes the most strain.

Torque, Flow and Pressure

Torque is what turns a big auger through hard ground, so larger holes and tougher ground need a bigger drive. Oil flow sets how fast the auger turns and pressure sets the torque, so check your excavator's auxiliary circuit can supply the drive's flow and pressure before you order.

What's Included

Every drive comes with hoses, and all but the 20000 MAX and 25000 MAX come with adaptors too. Quick release couplers aren't included, and on the 20000 MAX and 25000 MAX Auger Torque recommends plumbing the drive in directly. An optional 2-way valve and pressure relief valve are available for the 12000 MAX and larger. The hitch and auger are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an earth drill and an auger?

The earth drill is the hydraulic drive unit. The auger is the bit it turns to drill the hole.

Which earth drill do I need?

Start with your excavator's weight in the table above, then check its auxiliary flow and pressure. Our guide on what size auger you need explains it step by step.

Can I run an earth drill off a hammer circuit?

An earth drill needs two-way flow. On the 12000 MAX and larger, an optional 2-way valve converts a single-acting hammer circuit. For smaller drives, send us your machine details and we'll check your setup.

How long does delivery take?

Usually 7 to 10 working days. Hitches are made to your measurements, so we confirm them before anything is supplied. Ask us if you need it for a fixed date.
