What Is a Fixed Grading Bucket?

A fixed grading bucket is a wide, normally toothless bucket built for levelling, spreading, backfilling, ditch cleaning and handling loose material. It still curls in and out with the excavator linkage, but it cannot roll independently from side to side.

In UK plant terminology, a fixed grading bucket may also be sold as a fixed ditching bucket, finishing bucket or ditch-cleaning bucket. Those names commonly describe the same broad attachment type. They should not be confused with a tilt ditching bucket, which adds side-to-side movement.

The fixed design works well when the excavator can sit square to the job and the surface follows the bucket's natural plane. Typical work includes:

  • Levelling topsoil, sub-base and loose aggregate
  • Backfilling and spreading previously excavated material
  • Preparing flat areas for landscaping, paving or further construction
  • Cleaning a straight ditch that the machine can approach correctly
  • Final site tidy-up and general material handling

Fewer components normally mean less attachment weight, simpler inspection and no tilt mechanism to connect or maintain. On flat, repetitive work, extra movement may provide little practical benefit.

What Is a Tilt Grading Bucket?

A tilt grading bucket performs similar finishing duties but can angle its cutting edge across the excavator. That extra movement lets the operator follow a bank, crossfall, verge or ditch side while the carrier remains in a more suitable position.

This is useful where the surface changes direction or the excavator cannot line up square to every pass. Common applications include:

  • Shaping banks, verges and landscaping contours
  • Forming drainage falls, swales and ditch sides
  • Finishing around kerbs, walls and other obstacles
  • Matching uneven ground or an existing crossfall
  • Trimming slopes from an appropriate working position

A Scandinavian-style tilt bucket is a particular profile, commonly using an extended floor and tapered sides. It is not a general name for every tilting bucket. Check the angle, width, operating system, weight and connections on the exact model.

A tilt bucket is also different from a tiltrotator. A tilt bucket changes the bucket's side-to-side angle but does not normally provide continuous rotation. A tiltrotator sits between the excavator and attachment and gives compatible tools both movements. On a machine with a tiltrotator, a separate tilting bucket may duplicate an existing function.

The Main Differences in Real Work

1. Matching Flat and Sloping Surfaces

A fixed bucket follows the position of the machine and linkage. On an open, level area this is predictable and efficient: set up square to the surface and complete shallow, overlapping passes.

When the surface falls across the machine, the operator must change the excavator's position, use the boom and bucket to approximate the angle or accept more finishing work. A tilt bucket allows the cutting edge to be aligned more closely with that crossfall from the existing carrier position.

2. Repositioning the Excavator

If a ditch side, bank or shaped garden requires several angles, altering a tilt bucket may be quicker than repeatedly tracking and resetting the machine. Reposition before control, visibility or stability is compromised; the tilt function does not make unsupported ground, an unsafe edge or excessive reach acceptable.

3. Simplicity, Cost and Maintenance

A fixed bucket has no tilt pivot, actuator or associated connections, leaving fewer components exposed to dirt, impact and wear. It is normally the more economical option to buy and maintain.

A tilt bucket's additional cost can make commercial sense when it regularly removes machine movements or hand finishing. Compare the price with the time it can realistically save across your normal workload.

4. Weight, Capacity and Working Geometry

The tilting assembly normally makes a tilt bucket heavier than a fixed bucket of comparable width and may change the distance from the linkage to the cutting edge. Check the combined bucket, hitch and material load: wet clay is far more demanding than a shallow trim of dry topsoil.

5. Machine Setup and Compatibility

A fixed bucket needs the correct pickup dimensions or quick-hitch interface. A powered tilt bucket also needs a compatible control and connection method. Many designs use auxiliary hydraulics, but the circuit, pressure, flow, hoses, couplings and controls are model-specific.

Do not order from the excavator's tonne class alone. Confirm the exact carrier, hitch, linkage and attachment specification, and establish whether installation parts are included or required separately.

A suitable tilt bucket can complete most fixed-bucket finishing tasks. The question is whether the tilt function will earn its extra cost, weight and maintenance. It may be versatile for a drainage or landscaping contractor moving between flat areas, banks and swales, while a fixed bucket may complete open-site spreading with less complexity.

Owning both can make sense when there is enough work for a lighter fixed bucket on bulk finishing and a tilt bucket on shaped ground. Otherwise, specify one attachment around the majority of your jobs.
