What Does Grading Ground Mean?
Grading is the controlled shaping of a ground surface. The finished area may need to be level, such as a building platform, or formed to a deliberate fall so that water drains in the correct direction. It is not always the final construction surface: the excavator may be preparing the formation for sub-base, paving, concrete, topsoil or another specified layer.
It helps to separate the work into two stages:
- Rough grading: moving the bulk of the material, removing major high spots and filling obvious low areas.
- Finish grading: making small corrections and trimming the surface to the required level, slope and tolerance.
Trying to complete both stages with the same deep bucket movements usually creates waves and extra rework. Move the bulk first, then reduce the depth of each cut as the surface approaches the target.

Before You Start Grading
1. Establish the Finished Level or Fall
Identify the datum, required finished level and any designed falls before moving material. If another layer will be installed above the formation, allow for its specified thickness. Clearly marked pegs and a laser may be suitable for simple work; complex formation levels, drainage falls and structural work should be set out and checked by the appropriate competent person.
2. Plan Material Movement
Decide where material needs to be cut, where suitable material can be reused and where surplus spoil will go. Plan how imported fill will reach low areas without vehicles repeatedly crossing completed ground, and leave the excavator a route out.
3. Check the Work Area
Identify underground and overhead services. Check for excavations, voids, drainage runs, soft ground, edges and nearby people or structures. The machine needs an adequately supported working position throughout the job. Set an exclusion zone and a clear method for level checks; no one should stand within the operating area or beneath a raised attachment.
4. Inspect the Machine, Hitch and Bucket

How to Grade Ground With an Excavator: Step by Step
Step 1: Remove Unsuitable Material and Major Obstructions
Remove roots, demolition debris, large stones, saturated material and other unsuitable fill as required by the job plan. Covering unsuitable material can lead to an inconsistent surface or later settlement.
If hard or undisturbed ground needs to be cut down substantially, use an appropriate digging bucket for the main excavation. A grading bucket can scrape and trim loose material, but its wide, toothless edge is not designed for aggressive penetration. Step 2: Complete the Rough Grade
Remove obvious high areas and place suitable material in the main low spots. Aim to create the overall shape rather than chase the final tolerance.
Take controlled cuts instead of trying to pull a deep bucketful across the entire area. Deep passes are harder to control and often travel below the target level, creating a hole that then has to be refilled and compacted.
Step 3: Work From a Stable, Logical Position
Position the excavator on firm, adequately supported ground with a clear view of the edge and level references. Where the method allows, face the work and reposition regularly. Grading at maximum reach makes small movements harder to judge and increases the effect of attachment weight and load.
Step 4: Cut High Spots in Thin Layers
Use the smooth cutting edge to shave high areas. Keep the cut shallow and coordinate the boom, dipper and bucket so the edge follows the intended plane. Sudden corrections leave steps or scallops. Refer to the established levels because the tracks may be sitting on uneven ground.
Step 5: Spread Material Into Low Areas

Step 6: Make Overlapping Finishing Passes
Once the profile is close, work in straight, shallow and overlapping strips from a known edge or reference. The overlap helps prevent narrow ridges between passes.
Depending on the material and required finish, the operator may trim with the cutting edge, use the bucket floor as a longer levelling surface or back-drag loose material. No single bucket angle suits every condition. The important point is to choose a repeatable method, keep the bucket attitude consistent and avoid continually changing technique across the same area.
Step 7: Check the Level Frequently
Check both along and across the working direction before a small error is repeated across the site. Use the specified datum and checking method. If someone checks levels on the ground, stop the machine and follow a procedure that keeps them outside the operating danger zone.
Step 8: Correct, Compact and Recheck
Remove remaining high spots with light passes. For anything deeper than a minor correction, add suitable material, compact it and regrade. Complete a final check, confirm the drainage direction and inspect transitions around kerbs, foundations and adjoining surfaces. Leave without tracking over the finish.

How to Grade a Slope With an Excavator
Establish the top and bottom levels and required gradient before shaping a slope. Rough-form the profile, then finish it in manageable strips from consistent references.
A fixed grading bucket can shape slopes from a safe machine position. A tilt bucket or tiltrotator can change the working angle without repositioning the carrier, but it does not make an unsafe position acceptable.
Never assume that a slope, embankment or excavation edge will support the excavator. The safe approach depends on the machine, ground, gradient, reach, edge condition and method statement. Follow the manufacturer's limits and the site-specific plan.
