The 12–14 tonne excavator compaction wheel compacts backfill in trenches, embankments and subgrade using the weight and down-force of your excavator. It's a sheepsfoot-style wheel: a narrow drum with clubfoot lugs that concentrate the load onto a small area, so it compacts clay and other cohesive soils far more effectively than a hand-operated roller.

The wheel is 465mm wide and 600mm in diameter, and the unit weighs 360kg. It's fully mechanical, so it needs no hydraulics, and the self-aligning roller bearings sit in a sealed housing and lubricate themselves, so there's no routine maintenance. It's finished with the linkage to suit your excavator.

Key Features

  • 465mm wheel, 600mm diameter
  • Clubfoot lugs concentrate the load onto a small area
  • Best on clay and other fine-grained, cohesive soils
  • No hydraulics needed
  • Sealed housing with self-aligning, self-lubricating roller bearings
  • Finished with the linkage to fit your excavator

  • Subgrade and formation layers
  • Clay and cohesive soils
  • Groundworks and utility trenches

Compaction Wheel or Compaction Plate?

A compaction wheel kneads cohesive soils like clay and works well down a trench. A vibrating compaction plate is usually better for granular material such as hardcore, gravel and sand. For 12 to 14 tonne machines, see our 12–14 tonne excavator compaction plate.

Getting a Good Result

Compact backfill in layers rather than all at once, and check for buried services before you work in or near a trench.

Excavator and Quick-Hitch Compatibility

Machine weight is only a starting point. Excavators in the same weight class can use different pin sizes, linkage widths and quick hitches, so the compaction wheel is finished with the linkage to suit your machine. When you order, send us:

  • Excavator make and model
  • Machine operating weight
  • Quick hitch make and model, if you run one
  • Pin diameter and pin centres
  • Dipper width

Our guide on how to measure an excavator for a new bucket shows how to take the pin measurements. If you can't measure, send us photos of your hitch and we'll help.

Delivery and Ordering

Each compaction wheel is confirmed to suit your machine before it's supplied. Delivery is usually within 7 to 10 working days, although factory lead times can change this. If you need it for a fixed date, contact us before ordering so we can confirm the current lead time.

12–14 Tonne Compaction Wheel FAQs

What is a sheepsfoot roller?

A compaction wheel with lugs, or feet, around the drum. The lugs push into the soil and concentrate the load, which compacts clay and cohesive soils better than a smooth roller.

Does it need hydraulics?

No. It's fully mechanical and works off the excavator's own down-force.

Which soils is it best for?

Fine-grained, cohesive soils like clay. For granular material such as hardcore and gravel, a vibrating compaction plate is usually the better choice.

Will it fit my 12–14 tonne excavator?

It's finished with the linkage to suit your machine. Send us your make, model, pin diameter, pin centres, dipper width and quick hitch details and we'll confirm it before it's supplied.

Other Sizes

For a smaller or larger machine, see the 6–8 tonne compaction wheel or the 17–22 tonne compaction wheel. Compare every size in our excavator compaction wheels and plates, or browse all our excavator tools.
