The 5–10 tonne excavator flail mower is the heaviest flail in the range. Its hammer blades cut material up to 80mm thick, from rough grass and brush to gorse and small saplings, and a 1250mm or 1500mm head covers plenty of ground on bigger jobs.

A high-torque direct drive motor spins the rotor, and the hammer blades cut and chop whatever the head passes over. The self-levelling head follows the ground, a height-adjustable roller sets the cutting height, and a pre-set flow control valve with anti-shock and anti-cavitation protection looks after the motor. On the end of an excavator arm, the flail has the reach to cut banks, ditch sides and hedges from the cab.

It's supplied with two hoses for flow and return and needs no drain line. Check your excavator's auxiliary flow against the figures below, then send us your machine and hitch details so we can confirm fitment before it's supplied.

Which Width?

Both heads run on 60–80 l/min. The 1500mm head covers more ground with each pass and weighs 371kg, against 335kg for the 1250mm head, which is lighter and easier to place in tight spots.

Where It Works Best

This size is built for heavier growth and bigger sites:

  • Cutting heavy brush, gorse and small saplings
  • Hedgerow cutting with the reach of a bigger machine
  • Site clearance on development and infrastructure projects
  • Embankment, verge and drainage maintenance
  • Clearing rough, uneven ground

Y-Blades or Hammer Blades?

This flail is fitted with heavier-duty hammer blades, which cut thicker brush and hedgerow material up to 80mm. The smaller 0.8–2 tonne and 1.5–3 tonne flail mowers use Y-blades, which suit grass and lighter growth up to 20mm.

Hydraulic Requirements

Both heads need 60–80 l/min of oil flow, at a maximum pressure of 220 bar. The flail is supplied with two hoses for flow and return and needs no drain line. If your machine's auxiliary flow is below the range, the rotor won't reach full speed and the cut will suffer, so check your manual or spec sheet before ordering. Don't assume couplings or installation parts are included unless they are listed on your quote.

Before You Start

A flail mower can throw stones and debris, so keep everyone well clear of the working area, and walk the ground first for wire, fencing, stones and other hidden objects. Check hedges, scrub and long grass for nesting birds. In England, hedgerows on or next to farmland can't be cut or trimmed from 1 March to 31 August unless an exception applies. Our guide on how to use an excavator flail mower covers set-up, cutting technique and the rules.

Excavator and Quick-Hitch Compatibility

Machine weight is only a starting point. Excavators in the same weight class can use different pin sizes, linkage widths, quick hitches and auxiliary hydraulics, so please send us the following when you order:

  • Excavator make and model
  • Machine operating weight
  • Quick hitch make and model, if you run one
  • Pin diameter and pin centres
  • Dipper width
  • Auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure, from your manual or spec sheet

Our guide on how to measure an excavator for a new bucket shows how to take the pin measurements. If you can't measure, send us photos of your hitch and we'll help.

Delivery and Ordering

Each flail mower is confirmed to suit your machine before it's supplied. Delivery is usually within 7 to 10 working days, although factory lead times can change this. If you need it for a fixed date, contact us before ordering so we can confirm the current lead time.

5–10 Tonne Flail Mower FAQs

What can it cut?

Its hammer blades cut grass, brush and hedgerow growth up to 80mm thick.

What oil flow does it need?

Both heads need 60–80 l/min of oil flow, at a maximum pressure of 220 bar. Check your excavator's auxiliary flow in its manual or spec sheet, or send us your machine details and we'll check it for you.

Does it need a drain line?

No. It comes with two hoses for flow and return and doesn't need a case drain.

Can it cut small trees?

It cuts material up to 80mm thick, such as gorse, brush and small saplings. For bigger stems, use an excavator tree shear, which cuts stems up to 450mm.

Will it fit my 5–10 tonne excavator?

Machine weight is the starting point, but excavators in the same class can use different pins, linkage widths, quick hitches and hydraulic flows. Send us your machine model, hitch details and auxiliary flow, and we'll confirm fitment before the flail is supplied.

For a smaller machine, see the 3–7 tonne flail mower. Compare every size in our excavator flail mowers range. Got trees to clear as well? Our excavator tree shears cut stems up to 450mm.
